We pulled the trigger on the Santa Fe on Sunday. Guy wanted $2000 but took $1800. MrsGolem and LittleGolem are in love. Brought it home, S vended it to the best of my abilities (the floor mats are spending some time in the sun to dry) and a dded a cassette aux adapter. Just needs a USB charger, plates and insurance.
Big Blue looking resplendent,
Forest and Big Blue. Our outside cars.
The window sticker
This is what swayed me. A big stack of preventative maintenance
The good
Under budget
Stack of maintenance receipts of stuff done at a Hyundai dealer
Timing belt has ~ 20k before it needs to be changed.
Drive train is super smooth
Suspension is great. Brand new struts upfront. Rear springs in good shape.
Brakes freshly serviced
Wife and daughter love it.
The bad
Slight leak at transmission cooler
Rear suspension rustier than I’d like.
Moon roof doesn’t open
Center console cover missing
Plastic cover missing on driver’s seat belt latch
Gas shocks holding rear glass barely hold glass open.
With the proper love and care this old gal should last us a couple years. The wife is itching to buy a new Soul. If this lasts LittleGolem the rest of high school I’ll be pleased. Then maybe my wife will get a new Soul and pass her old Soul on.

Sounds like you did alright.
Great to see the giant bundle of receipts /records, that’s always a good sign!

I know it’s not the 50's DeSoto you were looking for, but I think it’ll work for hauling all her sports equipment around.
Drove it for two hours on Sunday including an hour of highway with no issues. Just a slight shake above 70.

Nice. As a probably same/close age kid (I’m 16) , I’d say LittleGolem should be glad and gra teful to have parents like you.

Any idea if the ball joints have ever been replaced?

S he better be!
All joking aside. Thank you and w e all feel lucky to have each other.
Not only are you the same age as my daughter but you’re also the same age as Big Blue!

We are in a golden age of cars and nobody can prove me wrong.
Seriously, even ignoring inflation I doubt you could find something this good for so cheap ever in history.
And you got something resembling service records. Wow.

I’ll have to look through my stack of receipts!

When m y Explorer shook violently over 70 and the culprit was ball joints. Could be something else, but they seem to be the thing that never gets replaced.

It certainly is a lot of car for $1800.

Oh yeah it’s pretty minor it feels like it just needs a balance, but I’ll check it out.

Cool stuff. Tell her a random kid on Oppo says to enjoy her new ride!
Now I need to find a car...the endless search rages on. I found an ‘03 EP3 Civic Si hatch that I so badly need...it would be cool to get something the same as my birth year, though if I can somehow pull off something newer that would be cool too.

Solid purchase!
You even found her a blue one :)

Does... does that thing actually have an intact clear coat??? I have no idea what Hyundai was using on these, but I can't remember ever seeing one that didn't have huge peeling spots.

Yup. That’s the first thing she said when she saw it, “IT’ S BLUE!!!”
That’s when I knew it was a slam dunk.

Are you buying yourself a car or are your parents helping out?

I think it spent its life inside but the beginnings of the h uge spots are there.

...half and half. I am doing odd jobs to make up money for the car itself for the most part; our biggest problem at the moment is insurance costs that’ll most definitely be put on my parents for a while until I can get a job. I want to get a legit job now, but my body literally can’t handle the stress (I’m severely underweight and can’t gain easily, the stress wouldn’t help) so my parents won’t let me. However, if the random jobs I’m doing (car washing, bookk eeping, etc.) keep on yielding steady profit like it seems to be doing now then maybe my parents and I can work something out. Problem is, my mom hates her job and my dad can’t work (legal disability, we’re getting benefits from that though FWIW) so time will tell.

Yeah I’m not excited about our next insurance bill.
Kinda of a catch 22 though. Unless you have stuff in walking distance you need a car for a job and a job for a car.

For girls it’s lower than guys, so at least you got that. Florida teen male insurance is absurd. And it’s all thanks to the stancebros in their slammed-within-an-in ch-of-their-life Honda products from the ‘90s-late ’00s constantly crashing and stuff. Jesus.

I guess it’s time to teach your daughter the joy of going to junkyards for parts!

Exactly!

Bro’s have been wrecking insurance in their crapped up Hondas for long before stance was a thing. Boy racers messing it up for everyone.

Nice Purchase and the Gas Shocks for the rear glass are always broken, it’s like the sagging headliners in 80s GM products it just is.

If you think it’s been bad before, just visit Central Florida....oh boy. My alarm clock is a riced Integra leaving for work at 8am.

... visit Central Florida...
No thanks.

Probably just a poorly balanced tire.
I hope it works out well for her!

Bought my 1994 off the 2nd owner, with all records since new for $650. It needed new VC gaskets, otherwise it was pretty much mint. The same van today would cost me over $3000 in the same condition....
Honestly, IMO pre-C4C was the golden age of used cars. You could easily buy a nice driver under $500 all day long. Since C4C that nice driver is a $2500+ car.

Strangely enough, that has been changing in recent years. Enough women have been getting into at fault incidents that in some states it’s on average cheaper to insure men.
Either way, I can’t wait to see what your first car will be! Mine was a 2001 Kia Rio sedan with a bodge job repaired passenger rear door and an engine cooling fan that didn’t work. I sent that car so hard and it was a loyal companion taking it in stride. I still occasionally do a VIN search to see if I can find it.
